  SONG MEANINGS

Set The World Afire
This is about the supposedly upcoming 3rd world war in 1999.

References:The line, "Einstein said ‘We'll use rocks on the other side,’" refers to the Einstein quote, "The next World War will be fought with stones," meaning, of course, that nuclear weapons would bomb the world back to the stone age. The line, "The arsenal of Megadeth can’t be rid of," comes from a pamphlet by California Senator Alan Cranston which reads, "The arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to."

Anarchy In the U.K.
The Sex Pistol's cover song. Steve Jones Makes a guest appearance on this song. Megadeth actually misheard several lyrics original Sex Pistols's song, for better or for worse. 'Other cunt-like tendencies' is actually 'Another council tenancy.' 'No dog's body' is actually 'No, don't worry.' But, Megadeth performs 'Anarchy' as a 'fun' song and not as a serious one. Careful analysis of the lyrics is not necessary.

References:The MPLA is the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, an Africa-based political party. The UDA is the name of the organization that opposes the IRA. The IRA, obviously, is the Irish Republican Army, the paramilitary force that opposes the connection of Northern Ireland to Great Britain and refuses to recognize the Irish government in Dublin.

Mary Jane
Contrary to popular belief this song is not about pot, it's about a ghost named Mary Jane that haunts a forest. Why does she haunt the forest you ask? Well, she began to screw around with witchcraft and her father found out. Well, here dad burned her alive and she haunts the forest as a result.

502
502 is a police term for driving drunk on the interstate highways. I believe this also has to do with the fact that Dave needs a new high, asides from the drugs and that speeding under the influence was the answer. Dave would later be arrested for this.

In My Darkest Hour
This song is an expression of how Dave felt when he learned that Cliff Burton died.

Liar
This song is about Chris Poland, who is accused to by Dave of stealing his guitars to buy drugs: "Chris Poland--you know what?--he could die tomorrow and it wouldn't affect me...Chris has never made ammends to me for stealing all my gear. I had a collector's item Echoplex which just dissappeared, all sorts of guitars, which were all stolen to cash in for heroin. I'm willing to forgive and forget, but until he comes and makes ammends with me then I'm not willing to give in." (Mustaine, 1992)
Chris' defense for this was that Dave's gear was broken into and stolen.

Hook In Mouth
This song is about the PMRC. This is the group that introduced all those "Parental Advisory" stickers on your cd's and tapes. The main idea of the song is to show how the PMRC wants to control what we, kids, adults etc...listen to for music. It's censorship.
Several parts of this song are similar to the George Orwell novel, 1984. Perhaps it was the inspiration for the song. That would make sense, bcause in 1984, the goevernment had to censor every piece of literature and poetry. That's not exactly what the PMRC does, but Dave obviously feels that the organization oversteps the bounds of the government by putting warning labels
on albums or forcing artists to compromise their intergrity in any way.
